The Fool’s Journey: Meeting The Magician

  • Mar 2
  • 3 min read

After the Fool takes that first step into the unknown, something important happens.

They realise they are not powerless.

That’s where The Magician appears.

In The Fool’s Journey, The Magician represents the moment we understand that we have tools. We have influence. We have choice. We are not just wandering through life, we are participating in it.

The Fool is potential.

The Magician is direction.

The Symbolism of The Magician

The Magician

  • Focused Intention: The Magician represents directed energy. Unlike The Fool’s open potential, this is conscious choice and deliberate action.

  • The Tools on the Table: The four suits remind us that we already have what we need, ideas, emotion, skill and practical resources.

  • As Above, So Below: This gesture reflects balance between vision and reality. The Magician teaches that true power comes from aligning intention with effort.

This card invites us to stop drifting and start participating — to recognise our influence and use it wisely.

What The Magician Really Means in the Journey

The Magician sits at card number one. That’s intentional.

If The Fool is raw potential (0), The Magician is focused potential (1).

This is the stage where we begin to ask:

  • What can I do?

  • What am I capable of?

  • How do I use what I have?

On the traditional card, The Magician stands with one hand pointing upward and one downward. It’s often interpreted as “as above, so below,” but psychologically it speaks to something simpler and more powerful:

Alignment.

Thought, intention and action working together.

The Magician isn’t about tricks. It’s about integration.

The Tools on the Table

In most decks, The Magician has the four suits laid out in front of him:

  • Wand (action)

  • Cup (emotion)

  • Sword (thought)

  • Pentacle (material world)

In the Fool’s Journey, this represents a huge shift. The Fool was moving forward on instinct. The Magician understands that everything needed is already present. The tools are there. The question is whether we use them consciously.

This is the stage of personal responsibility.

And that can feel empowering… or uncomfortable.

Why I See The Magician as Dr Strange

The Magician

I’m a bit of a movie geek and I often use characters to help me understand tarot cards. If you’ve read through my tarot meanings before, you’ll know that’s just how my brain works.

So when I think of The Magician, I immediately think of Dr Strange.

Dr Strange doesn’t start as a master. He starts as someone who thinks he already knows everything. Then life humbles him.

He has to:

  • Let go of ego

  • Learn discipline

  • Understand energy

  • Study relentlessly

  • Accept that power requires responsibility

That’s The Magician.

It’s not about flashy spells or cleverness. It’s about focused will.

Strange doesn’t bend reality because he’s lucky. He does it because he learns how to align mind, intention, and action.

The Magician in tarot is that moment in the Fool’s Journey where we stop drifting and start directing.

When The Magician Shows Up in Real Life

In readings, The Magician often appears when:

  • You’re being asked to step up.

  • You have more power than you think.

  • You’re doubting your capability.

  • You need to focus instead of scatter.

It’s rarely about “magic happening to you.” It’s about you realising you are part of the equation.

The Fool moves forward with hope.

The Magician moves forward with intention.

How The Fool’s Journey Evolves Here

Without The Magician, the Fool would wander forever. The Magician introduces awareness. This is where growth becomes deliberate. And sometimes, this stage is uncomfortable because it removes excuses.

You can’t say “I didn’t know” anymore.

You know.

Now what are you going to do with it?

Closing Reflection

The Magician reminds us that we are not spectators in our own lives.

We have thoughts. We have skills. We have choices. We have influence.

The Fool begins the journey.

The Magician decides to participate in it.

And that’s where things really start.
