Let's dig a little deeper into our first chakra:
The root chakra (Muladhara).

But first, here's A very, very short bit of history.
Ancient Roots
The concept of chakras originates from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism. The earliest references to chakras can be found in the Vedas, ancient sacred texts dating back to around 1500 BCE. These texts describe various aspects of spiritual knowledge, including the energy centers in the body.
Development in Hinduism
In Hindu philosophy, the chakra system is elaborated upon in various texts, including the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The term "chakra" itself comes from the Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "disk," symbolizing the spinning energy centers. Traditionally, there are seven main chakras aligned along the spine, each associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
Buddhist Influence
In Buddhism, particularly in Tantric practices, the chakra system is also recognized, though it may differ in interpretation and emphasis. The Tibetan Buddhist traditions incorporate the concept of chakras within their practices, focusing on the energy flow and its connection to enlightenment.
So, let's take a look at the Root Chakra.
The Root Chakra is associated with the element of earth, representing our connection to the physical world. It governs our ability to take care of our basic needs, such as food, shelter, and water, and handle the challenges of the material world.
This chakra is closely linked to our survival instincts, which help us respond to potential threats in our environment. It is believed to control our fight-or-flight response, enabling us to act quickly and decisively in dangerous situations.
Physically, the Root Chakra governs:
The first three vertebrae
The Bladder
The Colon
Legs, Feet, Bones
Large Intestine
Adrenal Glands
When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel stable, secure, and grounded. We have a strong foundation to pursue our dreams and ambitions. However, when this chakra is blocked or imbalanced, we may experience a lack of confidence, fear, anxiety, and other emotional and psychological issues.
Therefore, it's essential to maintain the health and balance of our Root Chakra through practices such as meditation, yoga, mindfulness, and other grounding activities. By doing so, we can cultivate a strong sense of safety, security, and stability that supports our overall well-being.

The symbolism of the Root Chakra.
The Root Chakra is often depicted as a lotus flower with four petals arranged in a circle, with a downward-facing triangle at its centre. This symbolises the connection between our spiritual self and the physical world.
What does an unbalanced Root Chakra feel like?
When your root chakra is out of balance, it can cause many physical and emotional issues. An unbalanced root chakra might make you feel anxious, negative, insecure, and always in survival mode. This can lead to a lot of fear, paranoia, and a tendency to withdraw from the world, which can make you feel like a victim and become defensive. Physically, an unbalanced root chakra can cause lower back pain, fatigue, sciatica, issues with your colon and bladder, an over or under-active sex drive, constipation, IBS, and even depression. To feel more grounded and stable, it's important to address any imbalances in your root chakra.
Is it underactive or overactive?
An overactive root chakra can lead to an increased need for security, so you may find yourself more inclined to suffer from hoarding possessions, overeating, greed, and rigid boundaries. You will feel disorganised and unable to finish any projects. This will result in feelings of anger, frustration, and aggression toward people and situations around you. You may find yourself becoming dependent on security from other people or habits. You can be very impulsive and quick to anger at the smallest of things.
If your root chakra is underactive, it can affect your physical and emotional well-being. You might feel like you're not connected to your body and experience fear and anxiety. You might also find it hard to stay focused, be disciplined, and set boundaries, which can lead to feeling disorganised. To make matters worse, you might also feel like your self-image is in the dumps and that your life is out of control. It's essential to take care of your root chakra to maintain a balanced and healthy life.

Activities that help you balance your Root Chakra.
Physical exercise.
Physical activities like yoga, where you focus on your breath and movement to boost physical and mental well-being, gardening, where you connect with nature and grow things, or even walking barefoot on the grass, where you feel the earth under your feet, can help balance and activate your root chakra. Even better if you can do that in the purifying sunshine.
Sound.
One of my favourite ways to balance my root chakra is by using sound. Sounds can stimulate an emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual response. For example, can you recall the last time you danced to your favourite song? Do you recall how it made you feel? I know that when I do, it makes me feel very energetic, free and definitely more positive.
On a side sound note, did you know there is a sound for each chakra?
Chakra Sounds (Bija Mantras, In Sanskrit, "Bija" translates to "Seed")
Root Chakra: Lam (Earth)
Sacral Chakra: Vam (Water)
Solar Plexus Chakra: Ram (Fire)
Heart Chakra: Yam (Air)
Throat Chakra: Ham (Ether)
Third Eye Chakra: Om (Transcendance)
Crown Chakra: Silence (or the sound of "Om" can also be used) (Fullness)
A chant isn't restricted to a single chakra. For example, if you feel your heart chakra needs grounding energy, you can use the "earth" grounding chant LAM.
Colour.
Using the colour RED in everyday life can help balance your root chakra. For example, wear clothing that connects you to your chakra and helps it influence your mood, your mind, and your energy levels. I have discovered that using a red water bottle infuses my water with the energy of that colour, which helps me feel better connected to my chakras.
Sunlight & Meditation.
Obviously, we all know that sunlight is a natural purifier. Use this to your advantage and have a nice stroll in the sun and nature; it will have an amazing cleansing effect and help regulate the flow of your energy. The best part is that you only need a few minutes for this to work in your favour. When I'm out in the sun, I love to use meditation techniques to keep my chakras in check. There are tons of meditation apps out there that can help you balance your chakras, too. Give a few of them a try and see which one vibes with you the most.
Crystals associated with your Root Chakra.
Wearing, carrying or meditating with crystals associated with your Root Chakra is another good way to help balance this chakra.
Crystals that are associated with your Root Chakra are:
Red Jasper
Blood Stone
Smokey Quartz
Shungite
Tourmaline
Clear Quartz
I have found loads of great ways to rock my favourite crystals! My go-to is a gold chain with an adjustable basket, so I can switch up the crystal depending on my mood. It's such a great way to balance your charka throughout the day!
May this blog inspire you on your journey of self-healing.
