9 The Hermit

9 The Hermit

UPRIGHT - Solitude - Introspection - Wisdom

REVERSED - Isolation - Withdrawal - Self-Doubt

When it comes to The Hermit, Gandalf is my go-to guide. He’s a wandering wizard who doesn’t just hand out answers, he invites you to find your own, all while shining a light on hidden truths. Gandalf knows the value of retreat, reflection and returning stronger than before (often with a wardrobe change).

He’s proof that sometimes you need to step away from the noise to hear your inner wisdom and that a bit of solitude can turn you into the wisest one at the party (or the council of Elrond).

In short: Gandalf is The Hermit because true guidance comes from quiet reflection, a good walking stick and a willingness to walk your own path—even if it leads through Mordor.

UPRIGHT - This is solitude with purpose. The Hermit isn’t lonely; he’s selective. He knows clarity doesn’t shout, it whispers. His lantern lights only a few steps ahead, reminding you that you don’t need the full map to move forward. This card invites introspection, patience, and the courage to walk your path even when no one else understands it yet.

REVERSED - The lantern’s still lit, but you’ve been hiding behind it a little too long. The Hermit reversed speaks of isolation disguised as introspection, withdrawing not to reflect, but to avoid. You may be dodging conversations, decisions, or the outside world altogether. This card nudges you to ask: Is your solitude nourishing you, or keeping you stuck? Wisdom grows in silence, yes, but it’s meant to be shared once you find it.
